Beer Brewing Supplies - Basic Home Beer Brewing Recipe

Once you have all the beer brewing supplies, it's time to start brewing! Here is a basic home beer brewing recipe that will help you get started on your way to top quality beer. There is always some level of experimentation when brewing your own beer but don't worry -- that is part of the fun!

You can maintain the quality of the fermentation process by using a yeast starter. This can be done by mixing the yeast into the solution at the correct temperature, then slowly add more of the yeast starter into the fermenter.

Grab your basic beer brewing equipment which includes your yeast culture, boiling water, malt extract, fermenter, and a pot.

Now that you have all the above, follow the simple steps below:

  • To home brew beer, begin sanitizing your beer brewing equipment. Disinfecting your supplies is important so that you will not contaminate the beer.
  • Approximately three hours before the brew process, add 500mL of water to a pot and mix the malt extract.
  • Make sure that you boil the solution for a good 20 minutes, then allow it to cool down.
  • Test the temperature of the solution, and aim to keep the solution at approximately 77 degrees Fahrenheit for the best quality beer.
  • Stir the solution evenly and mix the yeast well.
  • Keep the temperature at 77 degrees Fahrenheit for about two hours and occasionally stir it.
  • Once the fermenter is 23L, pour in the yeast starter.

Mahogany Porter

One of the most basic and popular home brew beer recipes around is the Mahogany Porter:

1 can Chocolate Mahogany Porter

1.5 kg light liquid malt extract

0.3 kg maltodextrin (corn syrup)

15 gram Saaz pellets

If all of the above sounds a little too much, an even easier way to start brewing is to look at starter home brewing kits. These are fully stocked with everything that you need for your first batch and they are not very expensive considering the repayment that they give.

Remember, to actually start brewing quality beer at home, you should get quality equipment. You get what you pay for in this industry and remember that you do not need a lot of equipment and beer brewing supplies so it won't actually cost you very much - just start on a small scale and build as you get more confident. You will probably save the money that you normally spend on your monthly liquor bill anyway!

Then the rest is simple experimentation to get the best tasting beer that is right for you!
